Visit with Valley Ghost Tours – October 7, 2014
On a brisk October evening, complete with full moon and ominous mood clouds, my friends and I joined Valley Ghost Tours on a leisurely 90-minute stroll into the haunted and oft tragic history of Northampton. This outing was a little different from my usual escapades in that there was no actual food involved. But, when Valley Ghost Tours owner and epic story-teller Annie Keithline told me about a ghost dog running up and down the sidewalk in front of Starbucks – I was in!
Our adventure began in the shadow of the municipal parking garage and proceeded back through centuries of local scandal and intrigue. As we wandered from landmark to signpost, Annie regaled us with spirited tales of star-crossed lovers, hidden staircases, the original “mean girls” of Smith College and restless spirits of long-dead inmates at the former Northampton State Hospital. Buildings I had previously attached no particular significance, now stand monument to otherworldly suspicion, greed and comically appalling behavior.
No matter how well you think you know Northampton, you will never look at it the same again. Valley Ghost tours is open through November 2, 2014. At last check, there were still a few tickets left for Halloween weekend. Have no fear though, tours resume in April. You can find Valley Ghost Tours at:
